AI SEO for criminal defense lawyers

AI SEO for criminal defense lawyers.

AI SEO is the work of getting a firm quoted inside the AI-generated answer that now sits above every organic result. Someone asks Google, ChatGPT, or Perplexity what happens after a DUI arrest in their state. A short answer appears, naming two or three sources. That answer is the new first result, and most people never scroll past it. This page is about being in it.

Google AI Overview

Sits above the organic results on the majority of legal-information queries. Draws heavily from pages already ranking on page one.

ChatGPT Search

Answers conversationally and names sources inline. Rewards clean DOM structure and unambiguous factual sentences.

Perplexity

The most citation-forward of the four, and the one that weights visible authorship most heavily.

Bing Copilot

Smaller share, but disproportionately used on desktop and in workplaces where a family member may be searching.

01

Say the thing plainly, first

An extractable page opens with a sentence that defines the subject before it elaborates.Narrative openings that build to a point are good writing and bad extraction. The definitional sentence goes first, then the colour.

02

Show your evidence

Pages that cite real, linkable sources get cited more than pages that assert.Statutes, agency pages, published data. A visible sources block does more for AI trust than another paragraph of adjectives.

03

Be a person, verifiably

AI systems weight named, credentialed authorship separately from the markup that declares it.A visible byline with a real name, a real role, and a link that resolves to a real profile. Anonymous content is discounted on legal topics.

AI SEO, what we actually change

The build, concretely

This is not a content-volume play. It is a set of specific structural changes applied to every page that matters, plus the discipline to keep facts consistent across the whole site.

Definitional opening sentences

Every page opens by stating what the subject is, in one sentence, marked up for emphasis so extractors can find it.

A summary card near the top

The page's core answer, isolated in a card, with the lead sentence of each paragraph bolded so the claim is unambiguous.

Visible sources block

Real outbound citations to statutes, agencies, and data, rendered on the page rather than buried in markup.

Author and reviewer identity

A visible byline plus a schema graph naming the author and reviewer as real, linked entities.

FAQ as real headings

Questions as h3 elements wrapping the control, answers kept in the accessibility tree rather than hidden from parsers.

Factual consistency audit

One agreed figure for every claim, used on every page. Contradictions get a site de-weighted on legal and medical topics.

Schema graph, not schema scraps

Organization, WebPage, Service, FAQPage, and BreadcrumbList in one connected graph with stable identifiers.

Clean, fast, server-rendered HTML

Content that requires JavaScript to appear is content some extractors never see. Static HTML removes the question.

Every one of those patterns is applied to this page. If you want to see the implementation, view the source.

Here is our client inside the AI answer

These are live Google searches for Virginia traffic lawyers. In both, the AI Overview names our client by name and lists his site as one of the sources it drew the answer from. Nobody buys placement in an AI Overview. You get there by having the page Google wants to quote.

Cited across hundreds of queries, not two

AI SEO for criminal defense lawyers: common questions

AI SEO is the work of getting a firm quoted inside an AI-generated answer rather than merely listed in a set of blue links. Classic SEO optimizes for a ranking position. AI SEO optimizes for extraction: whether a model can find a clean, attributable sentence on your page that answers the question, and whether it trusts your site enough to name you. The two overlap heavily, because AI systems draw from ranking pages, but the formatting and evidence requirements are stricter.

They are competing names for roughly the same discipline. GEO is generative engine optimization, AEO is answer engine optimization, AIO is AI optimization, LLMO and LLM SEO refer to optimizing for large language models specifically. The vocabulary is unsettled because the field is about three years old. We use AI SEO because it is the plainest, and the underlying work is the same regardless of the acronym.

Both, but the attribution is genuinely harder than with classic search, and any agency claiming clean numbers here is overstating. What we can measure: whether your firm appears in AI answers for target questions, how often, and whether AI referral traffic converts. What is real is that a citation in an AI Overview sits above every organic result, and increasingly the person never scrolls past it. Being absent from that answer is a loss even when it is difficult to price.

Because they fall into what Google classifies as "Your Money or Your Life" content, where wrong information causes real harm. Pages about criminal charges, penalties, and deadlines are held to a higher evidence standard than most subjects. In practice that means AI systems weight visible authorship, cited sources, clear credentials, and factual accuracy far more heavily. It is a barrier to entry, which makes it an advantage once you clear it.

Definitional opening sentences that state plainly what a thing is before elaborating. A summary card near the top of each page carrying the extractable answer. Bolded lead sentences so extractors can identify the claim in each paragraph. A visible sources block with real outbound citations. FAQ questions as genuine headings, with answers that stay in the accessibility tree rather than being hidden from parsers. A schema graph naming the author, the reviewer, and the organization. And factual consistency across every page, because contradictions get a site de-weighted.

AI citations generally follow organic rankings rather than leading them, so the realistic window is one to two quarters after the underlying pages start ranking. Pages that already rank can sometimes be made citable much faster, because the formatting work is cheap once the authority exists. The audit tells us which case you are in.

AI SEO is included in the program, which starts around $1,000 a month depending on the practice areas you want to compete in and how contested your markets are. We do not bill it as a separate line, because separating it from SEO would be artificial. The same page has to do both jobs.
